Mikhail Bulgakov – Master and Margarita

A handmade, limited edition of Bulgakov’s novel that I illustrated, designed, printed and bound myself. The black cloth cover is screenprinted in glow-in-the-dark ink, so the title only properly shows up once the lights go out. That felt right for a story where the devil turns up in Moscow and nothing is quite what it seems. The dust jacket opens out into a poster.

Inside, chapter headings are set in Vere Dignum, a typeface by Phil Baines, who trained for the Catholic priesthood before teaching typography at Central Saint Martins for over 30 years. Character portraits sit in geometric frames, and the endpapers are covered in flies, a nod to the devil as lord of the flies. A set of seven stab-bound tear-off postcards was made alongside the book.
